Surprises in Paradise . . . . .

I’m back in paradise!  Did I ever share this picture here?  I took it several years ago, and then on the way home, reading the Sunday paper on the plane, I read that Parade Magazine had a contest going.  They asked for pictures from which they would choose the 100 most beautiful spots in America.  I entered this picture (or one like it), and in a few months received word that it was chosen as one of the 100.  They paid me for it too.

I took the picture at one of my favorite spots near Kaneohe, near the ocean and at the base of the Koolau Mountains, which are lined with sharp ridges clothed in green.  This mountain stream is clear as glass and runs through a golf course.  The clubhouse from which I took this picture is a story within itself.

It is  a large beautiful building with an inviting entrance driveway lined with palm trees.  It was once a public country club.  Then, a few years ago, it was purchased by . . would you believe this? . . the Presbyterian church.  It is so huge there is room for the church in one part of its interior, while the rest remains meeting rooms with gorgeous artwork on the walls,  and a huge dining room and adjoining facilities for weddings, luncheons, etc.  It’s glass wall looks out upon this beautiful golf course.  And downstairs is the golf club store . . and then Honey’s.

Honey’s is a well-known bar room that was once graced by Don Ho’s mother and then by Don Ho himself.  It’s walls are lined with pictures of all the famous Hawaii entertainers through the years.  Sunday afternoon is a wonderful time to go there for a little lunch or perhaps pupu’s and a favorite drink while watching local musicians and dancers who stop in to talk story and to perform when asked.  All the while, looking out upon this very scene that I photographed,

Here is a picture taken inside the building.  Trees growing on the lower floor, and although it doesn’t show here, there is a waterfall behind the trees.  Can you imagine what fun we had when we discovered this place, well out of the way, while cruising the island many years ago?
